The Road Awaits // The Extraordinary Car Club’s Summer Gathering
Words and photos by Andrew Coles
When the UK turns it on, it doesn’t muck about. Sure, the weather is often terrible but when it’s good, it’s bloody good. The lure of the open road was just too great, and with an invitation from friend of SCS Andrew Metcalfe to ride along for the Extraordinary Car Club’s Summer Gathering, we couldn’t say no.
We arrived to the meeting point, South Downs Secure, ready to enjoy a wonderful picnic hamper in the presence of a huge range of cars, both classics and those slightly newer. A Blower Bentley and 1912 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost took care of the pre-war aspect, with classics including a variety of Porsches, old Alfas and 90s Ferraris adding to the mix.
Behind the wheel of Andrew’s Boxster, trying to get away from Private Motor Club‘s Tim Hutton in an Audi Quattro and chasing a track-hardened E46 CSL, our loop took us through the wonderful Sussex countryside to Goodwood, before looping back for an ice-cream at Cowdray Park. It was here that things got serious, and the loop back to South Downs Secure was completed in the passenger seat of a full-house, FIA log booked Shelby GT350 historic race car. It rumbled. What a machine!
A sunny Sunday with friends, cars and some good driving roads – the perfect glimmer of joy in otherwise challenging times for all.
